Sundresses are comfortable and versatile garments that are perfect for warm weather. Here's a guide on how to create a simple sewing pattern for a sundress:
Materials You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Pattern paper or tracing paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
Steps:
1. Take Your Measurements:
- Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.
- Waist: Measure the narrowest part of your waist.
- Hips: Measure the fullest part of your hips.
- Dress Length: Measure from your shoulder to your desired dress length.
- Straps Length: Measure from the front of your dress (above the bust) to the back (above the bust) to determine strap length.
2. Draft the Pattern:
- Start by drawing the front and back pattern pieces on your pattern paper.
Front Pattern:
- Draw a rectangle for the bodice. The width should be half your bust measurement, plus ease for comfort (usually 1-2 inches). The length should be from your shoulder to your desired waistline.
- From the bottom of the bodice, draw a long rectangle for the skirt. The width should be your hip measurement, plus ease, and the length should be your desired dress length.
- At the top of the bodice, mark the center for the neckline. You can create different necklines like scoop, V-neck, or square.
- Measure down from the top of the bodice to determine the placement of the bust darts. The dart width is typically half your bust measurement, and the dart length is around 3-4 inches.
Back Pattern:
- Duplicate the front pattern piece for the back, excluding the darts. The back should have a higher neckline than the front.
- You can also add a center back seam with a zipper for easy dressing.
Straps:
- For the straps, create two long, narrow rectangles with a width of your desired strap width and a length equal to your straps' measurements.
3. Cut Your Fabric:
- Pin your pattern pieces to your fabric and cut one front piece, one back piece, and two strap pieces.
- Pay attention to the fabric grain, and make sure your pieces are aligned properly.
4. Sew the Sundress:
- Start by sewing the bust darts on the front piece.
- With right sides together, sew the front and back pieces at the shoulder seams.
- Attach the straps to the front and back pieces, positioning them above the bust. Make sure the straps are secure.
- Sew the side seams of the dress.
- Hem the bottom of the skirt to your desired length.
- Install a zipper if you included a back seam.
- Finish the neckline and armholes with bias tape or facings.
- Optionally, add a waistband or elastic to cinch the waist.
5. Finish and Fit:
- Try on the sundress and adjust the fit as needed.
- Trim any excess fabric, and finish the seams with a serger or zigzag stitch.
You've now created a simple sundress pattern and sewn your sundress. Feel free to customize it with different fabric choices, embellishments, or other design elements to make it your own.
